Bertha M. Simmons

Bertha M. Simmons, 90, of Alliance, died on Thursday, June 26, 2003 at 6:50 p.m. in North Canton. Born in Beallsville, Ohio on May 11, 1913, she lived in Alliance since 1952. As a member of the Union Avenue Church of Christ and the Radiant 60’s, she devoted her life to her family and the church. Mrs. Simmons was also a former postmistress of Laings, Ohio. Survivors include her daughter, Maryanna (Henry) Sweitzer of Hartville; a son, Charles Jacob “Jake” (Betty) Simmons of Alliance; 14 grandchildren; 28 great- grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and close family friends, the Joe Cotton family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Simmons in 1969; her parents, Jacob O. and Anna (Pugh) Hopton; two sons, Walter Guy Simmons and James Larry Simmons; a sister, Bessie Gallaher; four brothers, Homer Hopton, Encil Hopton, John Hopton, and Vemard Hopton; and one great-great-granddaughter. Friends may call at the Walton-Schrader Funeral Home on Monday, June 30, 2003, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Union Avenue Church of Christ on Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. with Minister Jim Mauldin officiating.
