Paul S. Varley Sr.

January 6, 1907 - October 28, 2010

Paul S. Varley, Sr. age 103, of Alliance, passed away at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Altercare of Alliance. He was born January 6, 1907, in Elyria, Ohio, to William and Carrie (Flowers) Varley and was a few months short of his 104th birthday. For the past several years he has been a resident of Altercare of Alliance, where he was their oldest resident. Mr. Varley graduated from Alliance High School in 1925 and was married four years later to Margaret Elaine Nogle. Mrs. Varley passed away in 1997. They had one son, Paul Varley, Jr. who passed away December 25, 2009. Paul was employed as a troubleshooter for the electric company and later was self-employed. His hobbies included bowling, camping, fishing, skating and music. As a young man, he played trumpet in the Reed Boys Band. He was an avid member of the Elks, where he was elected exalted ruler. He was also a thirty year member of the Stark County Fair Board. Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Margaret “Peggy” Varley of Greenville, PA; three granddaughters, Mary Lynn Varley and Lisa Downing, both of Greenville, PA and Margaret Meszaros of Sharon, PA; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Downing. A Chapel Viewing will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Fairmount Memorial Park, with interment to follow. Arrangements are by Walton-Schrader Funeral Home. 1131 W.
