Philip C. Clark

Philip C. Clark, of Alliance, passed away on February 23, 2007 at Roselawn Terrace after an extended illness. He was born in Liverpool, England in 1917, coming to Alliance as a small child with his parents Alice (Carr) and Charles Clark and was a graduate of Alliance High School. Mr. Clark was a much decorated veteran of WWII, serving as a member of the United States Army, First Division, 16th Infantry, and had participated in the North African, Sicilian and Italian Campaigns before landing at Omaha Beach for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant before his honorable discharge. His medals include the Distinguished Service Cross presented by then General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bronze Star, Soldier Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 8 Bronze Stars. Mr. Clark continued his service to his country in the National Guard as Lieutenant. A retired bricklayer, Philip was a member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Local Number 6 of Canton, and had worked on the construction of many area schools as well as several buildings at Kent State University. He was also on the Board of Elders and Deacons at the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He loved to read and do crosswords in ink, tell funny stories, grow flowers and vegetables and hike the fields looking for arrowheads. He spent many happy hours with his wife catching the wind in his sailboat at West Branch Reservoir. He and his wife of 65 years, Helen (Mills) Clark, by whom he is survived, volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels and working at Camp Limrod. Others survivors include his daughter, Phyllis A. (Evan) Case of Cuyahoga Falls, and his son, Dr. Bradley P. Clark of Mill Valley, California; three grandchildren, Elizabeth (Mathew) Johnson, Clark (Sarah) Case, and Mathew Clark; and four great-grandchildren, Conner Johnson, Evan Johnson, Ella Case and Philip Case. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clark was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Clark Robinson on February 3, 2007; and a brother, Leonard (Johnny) Clark. The family will receive friends at the Walton-Schrader Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Virginia Birks, officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please call a friend, read to a child, hug someone, or plant a tree and some flowers.
